What Are These Words Called?
These words are called:
Subordinating Conjunctions
That sounds scary, but you already know the root word.
Think about:
- a manager and their employees
- a general and their soldiers
- a teacher and their assistants
The people underneath are called:
Subordinates
A subordinate depends on someone else. They cannot operate completely on their own.
A subordinating conjunction does the same thing to a clause. It takes a complete thought and turns it into something that depends on another clause.
Think:
Independent Clause
"I studied for the test."
Complete.
Can stand alone.
Add a subordinating conjunction:
Because I studied for the test
Now it feels unfinished. It has become subordinate. It needs another clause to complete the idea.
