Why This Skill Matters
SAT possessive questions become much easier once you stop reading the entire phrase at once.
Instead, read the phrase one noun at a time.
Every apostrophe is simply answering one of two questions:
- How many? (One or many?)
- Who owns what?
Instead of trying to understand the whole phrase immediately, build it one noun at a time.
The Cheat Sheet
Noun's
One noun owns whatever comes next.
driver's seat
One driver owns the seat.
Nouns'
Multiple nouns own whatever comes next.
drivers' cars
Multiple drivers own cars.
Nouns
Just multiple things.
No ownership.
drivers arrived early
Nothing is being owned.
The Left-to-Right Method
When two possessive nouns appear together, don't panic.
Read the phrase like an ownership chain.
Pattern
Owner A ➜ owns ➜ Owner B ➜ owns ➜ Final Object
Instead of reading the entire answer choice, answer one grammar question at a time.
Step 1
Look at Owner A.
- Is it singular (
's)? - Is it plural (
s')?
Step 2
Look at Owner B.
- Is it singular (
's)? - Is it plural (
s')?
Step 3
Look at the final noun.
Usually this is just a regular plural noun with no apostrophe, because nothing comes after it to be owned.
