🛑 The Rule - The Instant-Match Rule
Whenever a sentence starts with a descriptive phrase and a comma, stop reading.
The very first word after that comma must be the physical noun being described.
No exceptions.
🚫 The SAT "Forbidden List" After the Comma
The SAT loves to trick you by putting filler words right after the comma to make the sentence sound natural.
If you see any of these words immediately after the comma in an introductory modifier question, cross them out instantly:
- there (e.g., there was, there are)
- it (e.g., it was shown)
- this or that (unless followed immediately by a noun, such as "this project")
🔍 Understanding the "Why": The Law of Proximity
These questions on the SAT test Introductory Modifiers.
A modifier is simply a descriptive phrase that paints a picture of an action, a trait, or a definition.
Because an introductory modifier does not explicitly name who or what it is describing, English grammar relies on an absolute law called The Law of Proximity.
This law states that the human brain automatically connects a description to the very next physical noun it reads.
Why the SAT Tests This
In everyday conversation, people are very forgiving.
If you say:
Walking into the kitchen, the pizza smelled amazing.
Everyone understands what you meant.
But grammatically, that sentence literally says that the pizza was walking into the kitchen.
The SAT exploits this mental shortcut.
They intentionally write answer choices that sound perfectly normal but are structurally impossible.
They want to know whether you can separate:
- how a sentence sounds
- from how a sentence is mechanically built.
How to Expose a Faulty Modifier
If the modifier does not match the first noun after the comma, you have created a Dangling Modifier.
Read only the modifier and the noun together.
If it sounds ridiculous, you've found the error.
Example
The Test Choice
An ecosystem contained in a single jar, _____ can be captivated...
A.) Amateurs
B.) Jarrarium
Literal Meaning (A)
Amateurs are ecosystems contained in a single jar.
Impossible.
Literal Meaning (B)
Jarrarium are ecosystems contained in a single jar.
By training yourself to recognize that the first noun after the comma is forced to lock arms with the opening description, these questions become structural matching puzzles instead of "what sounds right" questions.
