Workshop Difficulty Level: π‘π‘
Typical Duration: 1 hour
Overview
This workshop focuses on interpreting and translating complex SAT-style word problems into manageable equations, relationships, and problem-solving steps. Students will practice identifying important information, recognizing mathematical relationships hidden in SAT wording, and organizing multi-step setups before solving.
The workshop emphasizes interpretation first β helping students slow down, decode what a question is actually asking, and confidently begin difficult SAT problems that may initially feel confusing or overwhelming.
What Weβll Work On
Students may work on:
- Translating SAT wording into equations and expressions
- Identifying variables and unknown quantities
- Recognizing relationships between quantities
- Multi-step algebraic setup
- Function-based word problems
- Percent and ratio translation
- Identifying relevant vs. irrelevant information
- Building equations from written scenarios
- Recognizing common SAT wording patterns and traps
Workshop Format
This is an interactive, scaffolded workshop that combines guided walkthroughs, collaborative discussion, independent problem-solving, and coached SAT strategy practice. This workshop prioritizes strategy and interpretation skills rather than memorization.
Readiness Guidance
This is a Level 2 workshop designed for students who already have some familiarity with foundational SAT algebra and standard word problems.
Students will get the most out of this workshop if they are reasonably comfortable with:
- solving basic linear equations
- working with variables and expressions
- introductory SAT word problems (one-step)
- foundational algebraic setup
Students do not need advanced algebra or word problem experience prior to attending.
Workshop Level
Level 2 β Intermediate Strategy & Application
Level 2 workshops focus on guided SAT strategy, multi-step problem solving, and intermediate application questions. These sessions are designed to strengthen interpretation skills, reinforce foundational concepts, and build confidence with more complex SAT scenarios.
Students should already have some familiarity with foundational SAT concepts related to the workshop topic.
