Overview
This workshop focuses on translating and solving SAT-style distance word problems using structured setup strategies and equation building. Students will learn how to organize information using distance-rate-time tables, identify relationships between quantities, and confidently solve multi-step scenarios commonly seen in harder SAT math questions.
We’ll begin with foundational distance formula applications and gradually build into more complex setups involving multiple travelers, time shifts, round trips, and combined scenarios.

Workshop Format
This is an interactive, scaffolded workshop that combines guided instruction, charting/building tables, group discussion, independent problem-solving, and coached SAT strategy practice. The workshop emphasizes understanding structure and interpretation — not just memorizing formulas.
Readiness Guidance
This is a Level 3 workshop and moves through advanced SAT applications relatively quickly.
Students will get the most out of this workshop if they are already comfortable with:
- basic algebraic equations
- foundational SAT word problems
- solving for variables
- working with fractions and decimals
- basic equation substitution
Prior experience with distance word problems is not required, but students should already feel reasonably comfortable interpreting standard SAT algebra questions.

Level 3 workshops focus on more complex SAT problem solving and assume strong familiarity with foundational algebra concepts. These sessions move quickly through multi-step setups, strategy discussion, and advanced application questions.
