Overview
This workshop focuses on understanding, interpreting, and solving systems of equations using SAT-focused strategy and decision-making. Students will review what solutions to systems actually represent, how systems behave visually on a graph, and how to determine the most efficient solving approach based on the structure of the equations.
The workshop combines graphing, Desmos strategy, substitution, elimination, and SAT-style application questions while emphasizing interpretation and method selection rather than memorizing procedures alone.
What We’ll Work On
Students may work on:
- Understanding what a system of equations represents
- Interpreting what a solution means in context
- Identifying one solution, no solutions, and infinitely many solutions
- Using slope and equation structure to predict graph behavior
- Visualizing systems using graphs and Desmos
- Recognizing parallel lines and equivalent equations
- Solving systems using substitution
- Solving systems using elimination
- Determining when Desmos is the fastest solving method
- Comparing graphing, substitution, and elimination strategies
- SAT-style systems applications and interpretation questions
Workshop Format
This is an interactive strategy-focused workshop that combines guided instruction, graph interpretation, collaborative discussion, SAT-style walkthroughs, and independent problem-solving practice. The workshop emphasizes understanding relationships and strategic decision-making rather than memorizing isolated procedures.
Readiness Guidance
This is a Level 2 workshop designed for students who already have some familiarity with:
- solving linear equations
- graphing basic lines
- slope-intercept form
- foundational SAT algebra concepts
Students do not need mastery of substitution or elimination before attending, but prior exposure to linear equations and graphing concepts will help students move more confidently through the workshop.
Workshop Level
Level 2 — Intermediate Strategy & Application
Level 2 workshops focus on guided SAT strategy, multi-step problem solving, and intermediate application questions. These sessions are designed to strengthen interpretation skills, reinforce foundational concepts, and build confidence with more complex SAT scenarios.
Students should already have some familiarity with foundational SAT concepts related to the workshop topic.
