Overview
This workshop focuses on understanding rhetorical patterns and question intent in SAT Reading & Writing rhetorical synthesis questions. Students will practice identifying what a question is actually asking them to do before evaluating answer choices, helping them approach synthesis questions with more confidence and strategy.
The workshop emphasizes recognizing common SAT rhetorical tasks — such as summarizing, emphasizing, introducing, clarifying, or explaining — and learning how to eliminate answer choices that fail to accomplish the required task before returning to the full context.
What We’ll Work On
Students may work on:
- Identifying common SAT rhetorical tasks
- Understanding question intent and task wording
- Recognizing differences between:

- conclude
- Eliminating answer choices that do not match the rhetorical goal
- Identifying irrelevant or off-task answer choices
- Recognizing SAT wording patterns and traps
- Predicting what an effective answer should accomplish
- Practicing rhetorical synthesis strategy before returning to context
- Building confidence with SAT Reading & Writing interpretation
Workshop Format
This is an interactive strategy-focused workshop that combines guided walkthroughs, collaborative discussion, answer choice analysis, and independent SAT practice. The workshop prioritizes interpretation and strategic elimination skills rather than memorization.
Readiness Guidance
This is a Level 1 workshop designed for students who are newer to SAT rhetorical synthesis questions or who want more structured strategy support.
Students do not need advanced SAT Reading & Writing experience prior to attending. Basic familiarity with SAT multiple-choice structure and reading comprehension is helpful.

Level 1 workshops focus on foundational SAT skills, core concepts, and introductory strategy development. These sessions are designed to help students build confidence, strengthen understanding, and practice structured problem-solving in a supportive environment.
